In May 2010, Wnuk Spurlock Architecture won the Greenest Commute Award for the second annual AIA COTEdc Big Green Commute competition. The competition, organized by the Washington DC chapter of the American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment, is an interfirm challenge between DC area architecture offices meant to encourage sustainable methods of commuting to work. Over the course of the week long competition, firms accumulated points for carpooling, using mass transit, walking, bicycling and other self-propelled means of commuting to work. Wnuk Spurlock Architecture accumulated the highest daily average of points of the ten competing firms.
In March 2010, Wnuk Spurlock Architecture hosted a student from the University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture for a week long externship program. This was the second time Wnuk Spurlock Architecture has participated in the Spring Break Connections Externship Program which gives university students the opportunity to work and learn in a professional setting.
On November 4, 2009, Wnuk Spurlock Architecture presented conceptual drawings to the design review committee and residents of the Montebello Condominium for potential interior renovations to the public spaces of its four 15 floor apartment towers. The proposal featured an open floor plan, improved accessibility and security, utilized sustainable finish materials, increased day-lighting, updated electrical lighting, and showcased timeless furniture. The proposal also added amenities such as a calming water wall in the main lobby foyers and a new library with internet hub and energy efficient gas fireplace. In September 2009, Marcy Giannunzio, AIA, LEED AP, was appointed by the Alexandria City Council to serve a 2 year term as a board member on the Alexandria Beautification Committee. The commission represents citizens' values in city beautification matters and coordinates projects to encourage and achieve beautification. The commission also sponsors the Alexandria Beautification Commission Awards each year.
On August 1, 2009 the Washington Conservatory of Music celebrated the opening of its new performance and instructional space located in Glen Echo Park's historic Arcade Building. Formerly a popular amusement park, today Glen Echo Park is part of the National Park Service and acts as a vibrant arts and cultural center presenting festivals, exhibitions, and dances, as well as children's theater, music programs, nature programs, and art classes to over 400,000 visitors each year. Wnuk Spurlock Architecture donated a significant portion of its services to the design of the new facility which boasts high tech and environmentally sustainable features. The Washington Conservatory of Music offers innovative classes, lectures and concerts for children, teens and adults in the greater Washington DC area. In July 2009, Wnuk Spurlock Architecture received a Washington Spaces magazine Best of Remodeling Interiors Award for the The Adams Morgan Loft Apartment located in Washington DC. The Washington Spaces awards program recognizes architects who transform interior and exterior residential projects with exceptional skill throughout the Washington Metropolitan region.
In June 2009, Wnuk Spurlock Architecture received a Silver Award from the Brick Industry Association in the Multi-family division of the Brick in Architecture Awards for the Condominium Apartment Residences at 2120 Wyoming Avenue . Recognized as the nation's most prestigious clay brick award programs, the Brick in Architecture Award acknowledges significant contributions to the built environment utilizing brick. Award winners are selected by a panel of nationally recognized architects and designers.
As of January 2007, 100% of all professional staff, including Principals, became LEED® accredited by the U.S. Green Building Council.
Steven L. Spurlock, AIA LEED® AP was recently elected President of the Board of Directors for the Washington Chapter of the AIA. In addition to serving as President in 2010 he also served as Vice President in 2009.
Steven L. Spurlock, AIA LEED® AP recently completed his tenure as Chair to the Board of Directors of the Washington Conservatory of Music . The Conservatory provides opportunities for Washingtonians of all ages to develop their musical abilities through private lessons, class instruction, and ensemble performance.
In October 2008, Steven L. Spurlock, AIA LEED® AP was named Vice President, Maritime Museum of America Project, of the National Maritime Heritage Foundation. He has served as an at large member of the Board since 2007. In this new role, Mr. Spurlock will be in charge of The Maritime Museum of America Project, a major focus of the Foundation.
A member of the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange Board for eight years, Joseph E. Wnuk, AIA LEED® AP was named to Chair of the Building Committee for fiscal year 2010. After serving as Chair of the Finance Committee, Mr. Wnuk is, currently, an active participant of the same committee.
